About George Rice M.D.
Dr. George Rice is a family medicine physician specializing in functional and preventive medicine and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Dr. Rice’s professional focus and passion is the optimization of his patient’s health. This passion is driven by the countless number of patients he has observed quietly suffering as their health declined despite traditional medical intervention.
Dr. Rice recognized early in his career that a different approach to care was needed to optimize patient’s health. The current healthcare model focuses on acute care and symptom management. Conventional medicine is not efficient at preventing chronic disease and optimizing health. Chronic health problems do not occur overnight. It is critical to find and address the early signs and patterns of health imbalances in order to prevent chronic disease. Genetics, lifestyle and environmental exposure are essential considerations in health optimization and are unique to each person. In other words, each person’s plan to optimize health must be individualized as the pieces of their health puzzle are unique to them and fit together unlike anyone else’s. This approach – the functional medicine approach – adapts treatment plans to the individual resulting in outcomes that improve quality of life and that last.
The functional medicine model was a natural fit for Dr. Rice. Functional medicine uses a framework that is designed to seek out, identify and correct root cause imbalances that affect a patient's health. Optimal health is then achieved by correcting these imbalances in and across all body systems. This is a shift from the traditional population-based, disease centered approach to an individualized patient-centered approach.
Dr. Rice started the Functional Medicine Clinics of Alaska to deliver healthcare to his patients in a comprehensive and personalized way. The core operating principle of the clinic is that everyone has the ability, power and capacity to not just survive, but to thrive and live a meaningful and purposeful life. Functional Medicine Clinics was created to guide individuals on their unique path to optimal health.
